In July 1971, at Woodlands in Bombay, Osho gave two talks on jyotish. The first was titled Jyotish: Advait ka Vigyan (Astrology: The Science of Non-Duality). The second was Jyotish Arthat Adhyatma (Astrology Means Spirituality). This series walks through both talks, one theme at a time.
Osho did not defend the astrologer on the street corner. He said that in the name of astrology, ninety-nine out of a hundred cases are fraud. His belief was in astrology's deeper idea: the idea that a human being is not separate from the cosmos, and that the moment of birth ties each of us to the whole. He believed astrology understood rightly becomes a door to spirituality.
How this series is written
These articles are our own explanations of the ideas Osho presented in these two talks. They follow the order and the flow of his argument closely, and they use his exact examples and stories.
This is not a translation or a transcript of the talks. To read Osho's words in full, see the official English edition, Astrology, which first appeared as chapters 5 and 6 of Hidden Mysteries, published by Osho International Foundation.
The series
From the first talk: Astrology, the Science of Non-Duality
- The Oldest and Most Rejected Science. Why Osho called astrology both the oldest and the most rejected subject, and what Sumer, Chizhevsky, Paracelsus and Pythagoras taught about the sky and human health.
- The Universe Is One Body. Cosmic chemistry, the sun's effect on human blood, the true meaning of the word "horoscope"
- The Moon, Water and the Hidden Senses. The moon and the human mind, planets and professions, the soul choosing its own moment, and how fish and birds sense the cosmos.
- The Future Pulls. Lincoln's dream, Mahavira's teaching that what is happening has already happened, the time track, the chakras, the seed, and learning to cooperate with the inevitable.
From the second talk: Astrology Means Spirituality
- We Are Pieces of the Sun. Connection between sun, earth and man; tree rings and the Nile's long record; and how our senses hide most of what touches us.
- Birth as Exposure. Birth as the moment the film of the mind is exposed, what it means to be born into the night, and astrology as the ruins of a great lost science.
- The Three Layers of Astrology. The essential, the semi-essential and the non-essential aspects of human destiny.
- Astrology as a Door to Spirituality. Buddha's bow to the earth, Ali's raised foot, and the end of the ego.
